Flip Flops and Chocolate

Amy M. created this name for the club. It was going to be the name for her band, but it doesn't look like that is going to work out. Amy claims, "I believe flip flops and chocolate are the two most important inventions for women."

Cleaning Tips Corner By Lydia + A

My mom uses diluted Murphy's Oil for everything...dusting, mopping the floors, cleaning stuff off, etc. She also uses only Comet in the bathrooms. She will periodically post some sort of deep cleaning tip on the blog...For a more everyday approach, check out www.flylady.com or see below what works for me:

Monday: Dust Upstairs, Laundry (one load)
Tuesday: Vacuum Upstairs, David Mows Yard
Wednesday: Dust and Vacuum downstairs, Mop Kitchen Floor, Pay Bills
Thursday: Clean Bathrooms, Laundry
Friday: Clean out car and purse, De-Clutter one area of house for 15 minutes
Saturday: Change Sheets, Laundry

This approach has really helped me not get overwhelmed, and I have to admit it's pretty fun to have a clean house! We are gone a lot on Tuesdays so I don't do much on that day. Wednesdays I stay home so it's a little more loaded. When making a schedule, don't go overboard. Just pick one or two things each day that have to be done. If you stick to this kind of system, you are always ready to have people over and deep cleaning can happen less than once a month.

David's Aunt Peggy recently sent me this card. I think this woman accurately describes my current state. I especially like her boobs!

Expanded Club Criteria

Ok so I've received quite a bit of feedback from women who would like to be in the club but possibly don't meet the previous criteria. We at Flip Flops and Chocolate would like to be as inclusive as possible without compromising club standards. The criteria for membership has now been expanded to not being a perfect woman. You can tell if you are not a perfect woman in a few main areas:

1. Your mother taught you 1,000 (or in my case 2,000) times how to properly clean a bathroom but you never listened. As an adult you still dread the task and don't know exactly how to make the sink sparkle, but you don't want to admit that to your mother.

2. Before leaving town with your husband and your brother you decide it is really important to come home to a clean house. Nothing wrong with that, right? BUT, as you are picking things up you have a mental flashback to your childhood of your mom making you dust baseboards. "That was ridiculous," you think, "Surely we do not need to do that for me to feel good about our house being clean." But sure enough you hand your brother the dust rag and ask him to do the chore while you mop. When he says no way, you tell him he has to before you allow him to get in the car. Yes, ladies this is when you know you are either really anal or your mom still has too much of an effect on you.

3. As a 12-year-old you tried making brownies from a box mix and they turned out so hard your uncle Steve broke a knife when trying to cut them. Your cooking skills haven't improved much to this day.

4. Your husband actually LOST weight (15 lbs.) after you got married because you had no idea what to cook for him!

5. Sometimes when you look in your closet you don't really know what matches or looks good together. You come up with an outfit you know isn't quite right but decide to wear it to Target anyway. You then get embarrassed when you see your former elementary music school teacher in isle 12 and even though she is still wearing SAS shoes and has a bowl haircut you are tempted to ask her for some fashion advice on the spot.

6. Swimsuit shopping has never been a particularly enjoyable experience for you. In fact, for at least 2-3 years you have been really glad you live in Colorado where there really aren't any pools around.

7. Coming up with a theme for your child's birthday party is a struggle for you. Or in my case, you come up with really creative ideas for your unborn child's first five birthday parties, but you know you need people like your mom and husband to actually help you pull the details of a party off. (Or you know that if your child is more like your husband he will probably reject your cowboy theme in favor of a geology party).

Flip Flops and Chocolate welcomes your ideas of imperfection and how you have worked to cope with them. For example, I have done much better with cleaning since I made a schedule doing one thing a day. See post... Cooking is still a pretty lost cause in the Lisenby home, but David cooks a lot or we do Supper Solutions. Please feel free to post easy recipies on the blog. And the fashion...if you aren't very good at this before being pregnant an expanding belly does not help. Please see the fashion corner for some tips from those who always look cute. For those of you that struggle with creativity, feel free to ask questions on the blog. Then I'll ask you how to make all my visions happen.

Your Responses

Ladies,

I've compiled a list of the hilarious responses and new ideas for criteria you have sent me for the club. If you didn't get the first e-mail, read below. We also have one nomination for a name (see below and let me know) and several of you have volunteered to be officers. I'm working on a link off of www.lifewiththelisenbys.com that would allow us all to post ideas in a group blog style as we feel necessary. My only request is that we use the site to encourage each other as well as tease ourselves a little bit. I don't want this to turn into a "dog on your body" group, since we are all very beautiful women! The word ugly or fat is never allowed on the site.

No one has asked to be removed from the membership list yet, knowing they don't belong, but we may have some members who only met one criteria and will require hazing or a picture of proof.

Here are your ideas:

Other criteria: your face breaks out again like you were in high school and
you have memories of being called pizza face all over again.

How about the name "flip flops and chocolate"? Or "Chocolate and flip
flops"? I was saving it for my band some day, but it doesn't look like that
will pan out. I just think chocolate and flip flops are the most important
inventions for us as women...

At some point you have decided that everyone deserves a break and it
really would be ok for you to eat crap and not exercise for at least one
month. You then paid major consequences for that poor decision.
Is it ok if I did that during ALL four years of college? Because, I did.

I sure do love cookies!

I think there should be something on the list about raw chocolate chip cookie dough comsumption...

When all else fails and you need to feel better about yourself, take a look at Britney Spears....nuff said.

how about this criteria:
gained 20 pounds in 2 months after deciding things like pop tarts, chili cheese dogs and mcflurrys actually taste good?

Although I didn't gain the Freshman 15, I did gain more than 35 lbs during my pregnancy, eaten cookies until I've felt sick, and have had brothers & sister make fun of my stubby legs. So, can I join?

another potential criteria that comes to mind, similar to weighing more than your husband, could be weighing more than your 6'2", 50+ year old father (who is in general not a small man).

It's hard to have a husband who eats chips, cookies, crackers all evening and never gains weight. If I don't have them in the house, he goes out and buys them!

Here's to doing the best we can today! Now get out there and exercise...

Membership requirements

I've decided to start a new club. There are a few things that have led me to this decision: 1. The attitude of exclusiveness and defining who is cool in our new suburban neighborhood, 2. Going to the doctor last week and reaching over the "average" 35lb. weight gain mark with still a whole trimester to go, feeling frustrated that I've exercised and eaten pretty well throughout pregnancy and there is nothing else I can do, and then having a pow-wow with God and deciding for the rest of pregnancy I'm only going to refer to myself as a beautiful diva, 3. Re-connecting with some of my snobby sorority sisters who are all about clubs, and 4. Watching my mom's club "The Saggy-Ass YaYas" have their annual cruise two weeks ago on a pontoon boat.

There will be a few requirements to be in this club. The first hoop is determining whether you are a "real" woman or not. Real women have curves and have to work to keep their bodies fit. You must meet one of the following requirements, or if you are me, you can meet all of them:

1. You gained 15+ pounds during college or at some other point in your life and had to work hard to get it off.

2. You gained more than the "average" 25-35lbs. during a pregnancy, know that you probably will gain more than this amount, or did not have weight simply "fall off" after you had kids.

3. You have passed a cookie store in the mall and bought a large cookie with frosting and ate the whole thing knowing that you should have stopped half-way through because you were getting sick, but also knowing that you kind of wanted to get another one in a little bit.

4. You have brothers that have at some point in your life made fun of you for having saggy arms, muscle-man legs, or a double-chin.

5. At some point you have decided that everyone deserves a break and it really would be ok for you to eat crap and not exercise for at least one month. You then paid major consequences for that poor decision.

6. You surpassed your husband's weight during pregnancy and cried during the process of carrying a baby because his boxers and t-shirts didn't fit as early as 6 months along.

Potential members who do not meet one of these requirements may still be considered, however may be more severely hazed. This club is not for the naturally very-skinny, wimps, or those who have never struggled with real-woman issues. There will be other requirements on different topics along the way. The club maintence requirements include the ocasional e-mail from me sharing some important thoughts (since this is initiation month you may get more than usual), helping me come up with a good club name, and maybe eventually going on a trip to a spa or some other diva location. If you do not want to be a member, or know in your heart you really are not a "real" woman and don't belong, please feel free to remove your name from the membership list. If you are a true member, please e-mail me back and let me know which requirement (s) you meet, and your ideas for new criteria.
